Tamara

2011 | Layered Copper Mesh | 40 x 40 cm

A lot of the work I do relies heavily on technology and precision engineering.  Having just moved on from a good 20 years of sharing intimate space with a high resolution monitor, I savoured the idea of cutting copper with a good old fashioned knife.  There is something dauntingly beautiful about a super-sharp steel blade scraping through softer metal. Its a kind of mystical Periodic Table experience, particularly when done listening to good music. I find James Blake goes well copper.

Then ofcourse theres moiré . Layered copper mesh with the sun shining through from behind brings with it a magical collage of moire patterns. In physics, a moiré pattern is an interference pattern created when two or more grids are overlaid at an angle, or when they have slightly different mesh sizes.

My Father Behind Me

2008 | Copper Mesh & Perspex | 22 x 56 x 12 cm

This piece explores my relationship with my father. On the one hand, his complete presence and solidity in my life... Then, in a moment, that feeling of being completely alone and having to stand up as a man on my own two feet.

Yogi Credit Crunch

2010 | Copper and Chrome | 75 x 52 x 36 cm

I've spent a lot of time and energy trying to get to the bottom of what precipitated the credit crunch. Answers are fuzzy at best.  The ingredients through the good times were greed, mathematics (risk models) and confidence. In the aftershock, these turned to fear, prayer and begging.

Yogi Credit Crunch paints the surprisingly spiritual conversation I had with one powerful Goldman Sachs banker as he sat in the eye of the storm..
