Subatomic space

E=mc2 is the famous equation developed by Albert Einstein. E stands for energy, m stands for mass and c is the speed of light. In a nutshell the equation tells us that mass and energy are the same thing. At a subatomic level we are no more than layers of energy fields creating the illusion of solidity. We are made up of more than 99.9% empty space. Our understanding of the physical world is limited by the veil of our perceptions. This piece zooms subatomic space to the scale of human perceptual understanding. It gives us the opportunity to digest how matter is a matter of perception.

2011 | Layered Copper Mesh | 40 x 40 cm

A lot of the work I do relies heavily on technology and precision engineering.  Having just moved on from a good 20 years of sharing intimate space with a high resolution monitor, I savoured the idea of cutting copper with a good old fashioned knife.  There is something dauntingly beautiful about a super-sharp steel blade scraping through softer metal. Its a kind of mystical Periodic Table experience, particularly when done listening to good music. I find James Blake goes well copper.

Then ofcourse theres moiré . Layered copper mesh with the sun shining through from behind brings with it a magical collage of moire patterns. In physics, a moiré pattern is an interference pattern created when two or more grids are overlaid at an angle, or when they have slightly different mesh sizes.

Interconnectedness of Self

2008 | Ink on Canvas, Resin and Powder | 200 x 200 x 300 cm

Link to all things

As we move deeper into the 21st century humankind is only just starting to develop an understanding of the interconnectedness of all things.  We are at the dawn of an unprecedented era where each human begins to take personal responsibility for their impact on the Earth as a whole. For each living entity, mountanous and microscopic, categorised and undiscovered, we have come to know that survival is umbilically linked to the organic whole.

This knowledge has taken our species all of evolution to learn. It has given us of a freedom of creation we never thought we had.  We are no longer suffering the delusion that humanity is separate from all of nature. We are one with the Cosmos.

We are part of an energy family much greater than we ever imagined.

Know Thyself

2008 | Perspex, resin and powder | 150 x 45 x 35 cm

This sculpture I based on a precise 3D scan of my own head. I wanted to capture my physical being in as much detail as technology allowed at the time. It felt appropriate to be able to work on myself at the highest possible resolution that modern science would allow. It was at a time when I was deep in Freudian Therapy and was obcessing over detail. Dr Sanchez Bernal, this one's for you!

Maybe some other time when I have the words to flesh this post out a little, I'll go into the Art Bollocks of how one is able to deconstruct a persona and then reconstruct it again by looking at yourself from a particular point in space. Better to contact me though and arrange to come and see it in real life. It kind of says it all visually.
